Will Winter Win Russia’s War?

In late February 2022, Vladimir Putin invaded the Eastern regions of Ukraine. Since then, Ukraine have suffered heavy losses, but fought hard and have started to counter-attack the Russians. But the civilians of Kyiv and other major cities have been forced to endure harsh times due to lack of vital humanitarian aid. With Winter on the doorstep, and negative five degrees Celsius weather predicted, citizens lacking food and electricity plea for help and may well starve or freeze.

Do the Ukrainian people really need weapons, or do they need food that YOU could supply?

Many cities have suffered because of this war, main cities like Kyiv, Mariupol, and Kharkiv have been Russia’s biggest target; devastated by intense shelling. Other allies to Ukraine in NATO have given the Ukrainian armies weapons and money, and some food. But is this enough?

Ukrainian families who are trapped in the front-line of the war in these main cities are slowly starving. Furthermore, Russia has bombed the electrical service so with Winter setting in, these families may freeze as well as starving. If this food quantity is increased, it will benefit both civilians at home and soldiers in the trenches. According to the website Statista.com, between January and October 2022, the UK alone has invested 3.74 billion euros to military aid and 0.37 billion euros to humanitarian aid.

According to the Ukrainian newspaper, ‘Ukrainska Pravda’, at the beginning of the war, when Russia heavily bombed Kyiv, Russia used up their heavy artillery and Putin’s forces have not been able to restore to full strength. With no funding from other countries, they are vulnerable and are slowly running out of resources. On the 24th of October, ‘Statista’ released that America have given a total of nine billion dollars’ worth of humanitarian aid, but this still has not been sufficient enough for the people of Ukraine. 5. Such an interesting article. It doesn’t feel too long ago since we were all collecting clothing and other items to send to Ukraine so perhaps it is time for us to come together again in solidarity!

  6. Nice writing, Max and Charlie! It’s a real shame that we as a species haven’t learned from our history and seen that the senses loss of war can’t be worth whatever paltry gains you may get from it. I hope the people of Ukraine can recover what was lost, in time.

  8. What a very informative article – well done. So sad that one person has the power to cause such an unnecessary war, that has had a huge impact in Ukraine and around the world. We are thinking of all the Ukrainian people and hope the war will be over soon.
